Aircraft with the largest wingspan in the world completes first flight”

A release had the unbelievable milestone of Stratolaunch announced. By 2020 Stratolaunch aims to loft 250-ton rocket ships into the stratosphere to launch satellites.

Since the demise of Stratolaunch's founder Paul Allen in October 2018, the company has been quietly preparing for the maiden flight of the airborne platform, which is now the largest airplane by wingspan ever two fly.

The Mojave Air & Space Port is located in California (the "Golden State") and is the first site which is licensed to horizontally launch reusable spacecraft from. The plane is not just big for the sake of being big or to grab the record. The company did however detail past year some of the vehicles it will attach to the underbelly of the Stratolaunch. However, when it comes to planes, it appears the industry is moving in the opposite direction as they are not only trying to fit more passengers into planes for long-distance flights but now also creating massive planes in which to launch rockets from.

It measures 117 metres from wing to wing, more than a football field.

World's largest plane completes a successful first flight

"To see Paul Allen's dream come to life in front of my very eyes was truly inspiring and incredibly satisfying to me".

If successful, it will "enable airline-style access to space that is convenient, affordable and routine", Stratolaunch explained.

Moreover, it conducted simulated landing approach exercises at a max altitude of 15,000 feet mean sea level.

"We all know Paul would have been proud to witness today's historic achievement", said Jody Allen, trustee of the Paul G. Allen Trust. The plane was able to return to the ground safely after completing its maiden flight.
