Palestinian ministers sworn in again after oath foul-up

Palestinian ministers sworn in again after oath foul-up”

Palestinian government ministers were sworn in for a second time on Sunday after a lawyer noticed that the oath they took the day before had been missing a phrase.

Lawyer Nael Al-Hawah spotted the omission after Palestinian prime minister Mohammad Shtayyeh's new government was sworn in before president Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday. "There is no state without Jerusalem, no state in Gaza, no state without Gaza".

He also expressed reservations about the truce talks carried out by Egypt in the Strip, accusing Hamas of working on a project to separate the Strip from the West Bank.

The new government consists of 24 ministers.

During a meeting, the Palestinian president stressed "the Palestinian cause is passing through hard circumstances, but the Palestinian people and their leadership are on a level of responsibility".

The new ministers took office following a change of government that several analysts said was made to further isolate Hamas, at odds with the Fatah party of Abbas for more than a decade.

He told the ministers that the Palestinians have rejected the USA plan because it excluded Jerusalem from Palestine.

Speaking to his new cabinet members, Abbas repeated his rejection of Trump's peace plan and said it was not useful to talk to Trump after he moved the United States embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and recognized the holy city as Israel's capital.

Since coming to power, Trump has proven to be perhaps the most pro-Israel American president in history, breaking with decades of global consensus to recognise Jerusalem as the country's capital and Israel's control over the Golan Heights.
