Extinction Rebellion: Environmental protests halt traffic”

Protesters will gather at Marble Arch, Oxford Circus, Waterloo Bridge, Piccadilly Circus and Parliament square, peacefully blocking traffic and creating a "festival" of action including people's assemblies, speeches, performances, workshops and food.

Campaign group Extinction Rebellion posted pictures of activists walking on the road on Twitter and said: "We have taken Waterloo bridge!"

Thousands of people are expected to take to the streets of central London today, blocking the city's busiest roads and bridges to raise the alarm over a mounting climate crisis.

A protester for Extinction Rebellion has defended the impending Climate Change protests which are set to cause extreme travel disruption in London over the coming days. Extinction Rebellion have organised a nationwide week of action, they are calling for a full-scale Rebellion to demand decisive action from governments on climate change and ecological collapse.

"They can change a few of the laws along with the Paris agreement so that we can really work towards achieving a practical target".

He said: "People are frustrated and angry but if we don't stop climate change there will be a complete breakdown of society". They plan to engage in acts of non-violent civil disobedience against governments in capital cities around the world.

Demonstrators arrived at London's Hyde Park on Sunday, some having journeyed to the city on foot in recent weeks from various parts of the United Kingdom for what is described as an "International Rebellion".

More than 80 cities in 33 countries will hold similar events in protest about environmental issues, they said.

A spokeswoman for The Royal Parks said Extinction Rebellion had not asked for permission to begin the protest in the park and that camping is not allowed. No arrests have been made.

A Metropolitan police spokesperson declined to comment, other than to say an appropriate policing plan would be in place.
