Measles cases in NYC rise to 329, outbreak expected to worsen

Measles cases in NYC rise to 329, outbreak expected to worsen”

No fatalities have been reported in the United States from measles this year or last year, but 35 people in European Union countries died of the disease in 2018, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. The cases were found in 20 states spanning the country.

The measles virus is highly contagious and can lead to complications and death, particularly in children. This is because clusters of people are choosing not to vaccinate their children due to the spread of untrue anti-vax messages on social media.

The U.S. outbreak is part of a worldwide rise.

Measles cases rose 300% worldwide through the first three months of 2019 compared to the same period a year ago, the World Health Organisation has said.

A growing and vocal fringe of parents in the United States oppose measles vaccines in the belief, contrary to scientific evidence, that ingredients in the vaccines can cause autism or other disorders.

While 20 states have reported cases, NY has been the epicenter.

The New York Health Department also announced Monday it shut down the United Talmudical Academy child care center for 3-5-year-olds in Williamsburg for refusing to - or being unable to - disclose vaccination and attendance records for students attending its center, a violation of the health commissioner's emergency order issued last week. "This follows consecutive increases over the past two years", it said in a statement.

"Over recent months, spikes in case numbers have also occurred in countries with high overall vaccination coverage, including the United States of America as well as Israel, Thailand, and Tunisia, as the disease has spread fast among clusters of unvaccinated people", the World Health Organization statement said. If the outbreaks aren't brought under control, public health experts worry that the cases in 2019 will hit a record almost two decades after measles's "elimination" in the United States.

"We are very concerned about Passover and the [spring] break, this is a time students and families are congregating", Deputy Mayor of Health and Human Services Dr. Herminia Palacio said.

New York City has had 285 cases, virtually all of them in Brooklyn, since the outbreak began in October.

A state judge overturned the order, but Rockland is appealing that decision.
