Ovechkin knocks out Hurricanes rookie Svechnikov in Game 3 fight

Ovechkin knocks out Hurricanes rookie Svechnikov in Game 3 fight”

Well, the Washington Capitals captain added that dubious item on Monday night after dropping the gloves with Hurricanes rookie Andrei Svechnikov in the first period of Game 3 in Carolina.

The two Russians fought with 9:01 left in the first period, 86 seconds after Warren Foegele put the Hurricanes up 1-0.

Ovechkin landed three consecutive daggers to Svechnikov's head as the latter swung to no avail.

The Carolina Hurricanes' Andrei Svechnikov just learned that the hard way.

Ovechkin challenged Svechnikov to the fight after the 19-year-old cross-checked him several times in front of Washington's net.

There's not as much straight up face punching in hockey as their used to be, and even when there was, skilled players like Alex Ovechkin managed to stay away from it, valuing their hands over their ability to land a good right hook.

It was Ovechkin's fourth career fight and first since 2010, according to HockeyFights.com. Micheal Ferland also went to the locker room after a hit on forward Tom Wilson. His absence is a blow for Carolina, which trails the best-of-seven series 2-0. For Svechnikov, the No. 2 pick in last year's draft who helped lead the 'Canes back into the postseason, it was his first in the big leagues.
