Shapovalov Crashes Out, Nadal to face Bautista Agut in Monte-Carlo”

MONTE CARLO-Denis Shapovalov's clay-court campaign got off to a poor start as the Canadian lost 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 to Jan-Lennard Struff in the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters on Monday.

Millman, in his first match on clay this year, took the opening set after breaking the rugged Spaniard twice and saving four break points.

Main draw action heats up on Day 2 of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, with 15 first-round singles matches taking place on Monday at the Monte-Carlo Country Club. The pair split both of their FedEx ATP Head2Head battles a year ago, but Sousa won their only clay-court match on home soil in Estoril.

Nadal, meanwhile, is an 11-time victor in Monte Carlo - including in each of the past three years - and the second seed faces a showdown with compatriot Roberto Bautista Agut, who came from behind to oust John Millman 3-6 6-1 6-1.

Struff next faces Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, who lost in the semifinals to Rafael Nadal a year ago.

Kohlschreiber next faces top-seeded Novak Djokovic. Djokovic has won eight of their 10 matches, but Kohlschreiber recently beat him at Indian Wells.

"It's been hard for me personally", Nadal said of his latest physical setback.

Medvedev did not face a break point in a 6-1, 6-1 win against Joao Sousa.

No. 11 seed Marco Cecchinato of Italy won the first four games of his match with Damir Dzumhur before the Bosnian retired with an abdominal injury.

Belgium world No.21 David Goffin moved to the second round with a comfortable 6-1 6-4 win over Guido Andreozzi on a day when most of the other main names also made it through unscathed.

Medvedev has been in fine form in recent months, having advanced to at least the quarter-finals in seven of his past 13 ATP Tour events.Fabio Fognini, the thirteenth seed, will have a battle of experience against youth when he meets Russian qualifier Andrey Rublev.
