2 clients of 'vampire facial' spa diagnosed with HIV

2 clients of 'vampire facial' spa diagnosed with HIV”

If you haven't heard of this freaky beauty trend by now (seriously, where have you been?), the vampire facial uses platelets from a victim's - sorry patient's - blood to encourage faster cell turnover.

Kardashian posted a photo of herself with blood all over her face after having a vampire facial in 2013, but later admitted on her website she wouldn't do it again.

The health department's investigation has not identified any other potential exposures for HIV transmission for the two clients other than injection-related procedures at the spa, the press release said. Both clients reportedly visited the now-shuttered spa between May and September of past year.

"Testing is important for everyone as there are effective treatments for HIV and many hepatitis infections", said Kathy Kunzel, the department's Cabinet Secretary.

The procedure is touted as being able to rejuvenate the skin by boosting the turnover of skin cells, but its benefits remain disputed.

What should have been a relaxing day apparently turned into a nightmare for two people who officials say may have contracted HIV after receiving a treatment called a vampire facial.

Health officials in New Mexico are urging HIV and hepatitis tests for clients who got injections at an Albuquerque spa previous year after two treated at the facility tested positive for HIV.

With laboratory tests confirming that both are infected by the same strain of HIV, it increases the likelihood that the infections originated from the VIP Spa.

Now, all clients who took opted for this beauty treatment at VIP Spa between May and September of a year ago are being called in for testing.

However, if the micro-needling tips or syringes are reused, or if another patient's blood is used, infections can occur.

When you get a vampire facial, small amounts of blood-your blood, that is-are injected into the skin of your face.

Even in a sterile medical environment, anything calling for the use of needles and blood requires strict protocols, which are unlikely to be employed at a non-medical beauty spa.

The gory-looking procedure is touted as a treatment for fine lines, acne scars, sun damage and pigmentation. But the celebrities went to a board-certified dermatologist for the treatment.

The aesthetician at VIP Spa, however, was using unsafe practices that put her clients at risk of contracting HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C, and other diseases, officials said.
