Amid National Outbreak, Indiana Expands Access To Measles Vaccine”

"As a result, the Ministry of Health advises all residents to become informed about the disease, know their risk and take action to prevent this life-threatening, highly contagious disease".

This is from Chief Medical Officer Dr Cheryl Peek-Ball who said, "Bermuda's public health sector is on a "guarded level" of alert due to the ongoing occurrences of measles in North America, the Caribbean and Europe".

"Today, the overwhelming majority of parents choose to protect their children with vaccines", said HHS Secretary Alex Azar during an April 29 press telebriefing.( "However, we are very concerned about the recent troubling rise in cases of measles, which was declared eliminated from our country in 2000".

Measles is spread through the air from coughing or sneezing.

There is no specific treatment for the measles, though doctors can treat symptoms such as fevers.

"If you or your child has not been vaccinated against measles, [MMR vaccine] contact your physician or visit the Child Health Clinic located at the Hamilton Health Centre, 67 Victoria Street, Hamilton".

"From 1960-1968, they might have gotten a vaccine that wasn't as effective as the vaccine that we have now", Martinez said. Children should receive two doses of the measles vaccine, one at 12 to 15 months and the second at 4 to 6 years old. "Please call before going to let them know you may have measles".

How effective is the vaccine? Those who were vaccinated before 1968 with inactivated measles vaccine or measles vaccine of unknown type, in particular, should receive at least one dose of live attenuated vaccine.

Adults with compromised immune systems unable to get the shot should ensure that family and close contacts get two doses.

"We are working closely with local, state and out-of-state public health partners to make sure we quickly identify any possible exposures that may have occurred while this person was visiting Pima County", said Marcy Flanagan, director of the Pima County Health Department.

The majority of measles cases involve unvaccinated people, and the disease is spreading quickest in communities with relatively low vaccination rates.

I had measles. Do I need a vaccine?

"There is also a vaccination called an MMR, which is for measles, mumps and rubella", he said. The measles virus can live up to two hours in an airspace where the infected person coughed or sneezed. Most people born before 1957 are considered immune, because largely everyone was infected at that time, when vaccines were not available.

Infected people can spread measles to others from four days before through four days after the rash appears.
