Mississippi River reaches record high level in Quad Cities

Mississippi River reaches record high level in Quad Cities”

A temporary flood barrier failed in Davenport on Tuesday, submerging downtown blocks and forcing some people to seek shelter on rooftops. That was set on July 9, 1993 during the "Great Flood of 1993" when much of the Mississippi River was flooded from Minnesota, all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico due to heavy rainfall. "That could change with heavy rain".

According to the National Weather Service, the Mississippi River is expected to crest at 35.5 feet around Monday. The river is expected to crest Wednesday at 22.2 feet - just inches below the record of 22.6 feet set in 1993. The sudden flooding left many people trapped in their homes and vehicles.

Davenport Mayor Frank Klipsch said there were no reports of injuries.

City officials are asking both locals and travelers to avoid downtown Davenport as recovery efforts continue.

City of Peoria crews will work to protect the River Station building first.

Some areas of Iowa and IL were under a Flash Flood Warning after heavy rain.

In West Alton, Missouri, 20 miles north of St. Louis, the 500 or so residents were under a voluntary evacuation as the river was expected to crest a half-foot higher than the levee can hold. With up to 4 inches of rain possible in the region through Friday, the weather service cited a high risk of flash flooding and warned that river forecasts could rise even higher.
