NASA's InSight Lander Snaps Dreamy Sunrise and Sunset on Mars

NASA's InSight Lander Snaps Dreamy Sunrise and Sunset on Mars”

It took the shots at different local or Mars times: one at 5:30 a.m. and another at 6:30 p.m.

Although sunsets and sunrises on Mars are a common sight for humans, clouds drifting on the Martian sky are less so.

Scientists have likely detected a so-called marsquake - an quake on Mars - for the first time, NASA announced on Tuesday. The color-corrected pictures, meanwhile, will benefit humans as they can see the sunrise and sunset as they normally perceive them.

NASA has shared some images of sunrise and sunset on Mars that were snapped by the InSight lander. Another camera found on the deck captured the movements of the clouds during the sunset. Viking 2 caught dawn in June 1978, and each occasion had been additionally captured by the Spirit, Alternative and Curiosity rovers.

NASA's InSight lander used the Instrument Deployment Camera on the spacecraft's robotic arm to image this sunrise on Mars on April 24, 2019, the 145th Martian day (or sol) of the mission.

The image was captured on the lander's 145th Martian day at around 5:30 a.m. Mars local time. "With many of our primary imaging tasks complete, we made a decision to capture the sunrise and sunset as seen from another world".

InSight took some prepared for the extraterrestrial photoshoot by taking some shots in March.

The InSight lander's photos are available in "raw" and color-corrected versions. Since Mars is much farther, the Sun only appears two-thirds the size than it does from our planet. Its two-year mission has it armed with three instruments to learn more about the planet's geologic interior. This was taken around 6:30 p.m. Mars local time.

Using a camera attached on its robotic arm, the lander captured the images on April 24 and 25, the 145th Martian day, or sol, of the mission. Most recently, the robotic lander detected what scientists believe may be the first recorded "marsquake" ever, but the bot's talents go beyond its sensitive ears.

NASA's Viking 1 lander was the first to photograph the sun setting or rising on the surface Mars; that robot snapped a sunset on August 21, 1976, NASA officials said.

Mike Wall's book about the search for alien life, "Out There" (Grand Central Publishing, 2018; illustrated byKarl Tate), is out now.
