People Diagnosed With HIV After Vampire Facials”

Unfortunately, hundreds of New Mexico residents have been getting tested to see if they contracted HIV.

A New Mexico spa that offered special skin treatments, including "vampire facials" has been linked to two people who were infected with HIV, health officials said in a statement this week.

The two people infected by HIV received "vampire facial" treatments at the VIP Spa between May and September past year, the health department said. The two clients who are HIV positive also have the same HIV virus type, which makes it more likely that the infections are the result of a procedure performed at the spa they both went to.

According to the deputy director for Board and Commissions, the attending aesthetician at the Spa was not licensed, and the "vampire facials" procedure is beyond her scope of duty as an aesthetician.

Among those services is the spa's "vampire facial", in which a customer's own blood is drawn, and the platelet-rich plasma from that blood is injected into the customer's face. This development has prompted health officials to advise everyone who had patronized the Spa to get tested for HIV. This has put the clients at risk of contracting Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV among other infectious diseases.

The spa was permanently closed on September 7, 2018, after an inspection by the NMDOH discovered issues with how needles were handled and disposed of at the facility that "could potentially spread blood-borne infections, such as HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C to clients".

"Testing is important for everyone as there are effective treatments for HIV and many hepatitis infections".
