More than 1,000 dead in D.R. Congo Ebola epidemic

More than 1,000 dead in D.R. Congo Ebola epidemic”

It's been exacerbated by deadly civil conflict that's led to attacks on health workers and medical staff attempting to vaccinate the vulnerable and treat the sick.

The DRC health ministry has reported that the death toll has risen to 1,008 and more than 1,450 cases have been registered since August 2018.

"We are anticipating a scenario of continued, intense transmission", he added.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo declared a tenth outbreak of Ebola in 40 years last August in North Kivu before the virus spread into the neighbouring Ituri region.

To make matters worse and more hard, The World Health Organization (WHO) says the operating environment has become increasingly insecure and socio-politically complex.

Ebola treatment centers have come under repeated attack, and a Cameroonian epidemiologist working with World Health Organization was killed last month during an assault on a hospital in Butembo city at the outbreak's epicenter. The vaccine is experimental, but is estimated to be 97.5 percent effective. Earlier this month, armed men killed World Health Organization epidemiologist Dr. Richard Mouzoko in an attack in Butembo.

Insecurity has become a "major impediment to ensuring that we can access, engage with and serve the communities we wish to serve in Ebola control", Ryan told reporters in Geneva.

Doctors Without Borders and the International Rescue Committee suspend operations in the towns of Butembo and Kutwa.

On Tuesday, the World Health Organization said support to control the Ebola outbreak has lagged and maintaining security in the conflict-prone area has been hard. "Community trust and safety, as well as community engagement and ownership of the response is critical".

Ebola is a virus that can spread quickly and can be fatal in up to 90% of cases.

Fewer than two-thirds of the almost 1,000 respondents said they would take a vaccine for Ebola.

A health worker checks the temperature of people disembarking from a plane at the airport in Kinshasa, Congo.

It is already the second worst Ebola outbreak in history, although some way behind the 2014 West Africa epidemic which killed 11,000 people.
