Jeff Bezos Reveals Blue Origin’s Lunar Lander ‘Blue Moon’”

The lander was revealed alongside the new BE-7 rocket engine during a media presentation on Thursday.

Blue Moon isn't your typical lunar lander: Its cool features include an on-board LIDAR system that can map the lunar landscape and help select a proper landing site, and micro-satellites that can be attached to the top of the rover and leveraged when it orbits the moon.

It was known that Blue Origins had lunar ambitions-it was recently reported that it had paid NASA $50,000 for detailed plans for previous lunar landers, as well as NASA's observations and technical knowledge gained since those first missions.

If there is enough water ice on the surface, it could be mined and used for rocket fuel - making it easier to explore and stay on the moon, according to experts.

The unmanned, reusable Blue Moon vehicle will carry scientific instruments, satellites and rovers.

Bezos showed off a brand new design of its "Blue Moon" lander, which is created to carry 6.5 tons (5.9 tonnes) to the surface of the Moon. NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine accepted the challenge, saying the US will "utilize the resources of the moon".

The vehicle has been under development for the past three years, he said.

Mr Bezos wanted to improve access to the Moon, because he has a wider vision of a future where people are able to live and work in space, which is not possible today. He mentioned two important issues: reducing launch costs and using resources already in space. "It's in the form of ice". Industry sources said the image was a likely reference to an impact crater on the lunar south pole sharing the man's name, raising speculation that Blue Origin's lander was targeting that spot.

But his vision is shared by other billionaire-backed private space ventures like Elon Musk's SpaceX and aerospace incumbents like United Launch Alliance, a partnership between Boeing Co and Lockheed Martin.
