Theme, History and Significance of the Day for Asthma Awareness”

Asthma sufferers are being warned to be ultra-wary of air pollution.

New figures from the Asthma Society show the condition is affecting close to half a million people here - with one person dying every five days from it.

According to World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates, 235 million people suffer from asthma - which is the most common chronic disease among children.

Fayomi gave the warning in Abuja on Tuesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) while speaking on asthma to commemorate the World Asthma Day.

The key pollutant, nitrogen dioxide, is produced largely by diesel vehicles.

The strongest risk factors for developing asthma are a combination of genetic predisposition with environmental exposure to inhaled substances, and particles that may provoke allergic reactions or irritate the airways. In asthma, people's airways become so tightly compressed that it's impossible for them to breathe.

Moreover, the company will be organising live demonstrations across 100 consumer electronics and appliances stores in the country, reaching out to respiratory patients and parents of young kids to spread awareness around health impacts of indoor air pollution, and how air purifiers help in combating asthma triggers.

How to manage asthma effectively?

This week is Asthma Awareness Week and as part of this, the society has launched the results of an asthma management survey.

World Asthma Day 2019 is observed on May 7.

"They have targeted in the United Kingdom, and out healthcare system here has targeted, delivering asthma action plans and having one for every asthma patient is a really key piece for eliminating asthma deaths in the future so we don't have one person every five days dying as a result of their asthma". One should try not to stick around with this disease for a longer period of time as it can cause trouble in physical activities like running, jogging and exercising.

The plans should be filled in with a healthcare professional and reviewed at every available opportunity.

The Asthma Action Plan was designed with a traffic light system in mind, aiming to reduce confusion and help users to recognise if their asthma is under control.

"Research from the United Kingdom in 2014 indicated that in the case of people who did die as a result of asthma a huge proportion did not have an action plan, or it was not current and up to date for them".

The society's free advice line is 1800-44-54-64 and don't forget to check their website for more information on managing asthma.
