Norwegian woman dies after contracting rabies from stray puppy in Philippines”

A Norwegian woman died from rabies after she played with an infected puppy that she attempted to rescue while on vacation, according to news reports.

"Birgitte put the puppy in a basket and brought him home".

According to the family, no one in the group of friends had been vaccinated against rabies.

It's the first death tied to rabies in Norway in more than 200 years, according to the BBC.

Birgitte, who was a health worker employed at Førde central hospital, patched up and sterilized the scrapes herself. Signs that the disease has progressed include hallucinations, slight or partial paralysis, anxiety, confusion and fear of water.

Ms Kallestad fell ill shortly after returning home to Norway, then died this week in the hospital she worked.

'Our fear is that this will happen to others who have a warm heart like her. By that time, some time had passed since her Philippines trip, and doctors had trouble diagnosing her illness.

Birgitte's family are now campaigning for rabies to be included on the program for the Philippines and other places where it is is possible to contract the disease from street animals.

"If we can achieve this, the death of our sunbeam can save others", the family said.

Globally rabies is most commonly found in dogs and can be transmitted when an infected animal scratches or bites another animal or human.

The disease is treatable however when left untreated it can cause a life-threatening infection of the brain and nervous system in humans.

It can also be spread by an animal's saliva being in contact with a graze or cut on a human's skin.

Doctors first began to suspect Kallestad was suffering from rabies last Thursday, after being informed that during her time overseas she had been bitten by a dog, reported local media outlet Verdens Gang, according to the Washington Post.

At least 59,000 people worldwide die each year worldwide from the animal-borne disease, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
