Bird now sells an expensive 'electric rose' e-scooter (it's pink)”

The $1,299 price tag comes with a one-year warranty and a $100 credit toward any rentable Bird e-scooters, such as those now available in Brookline, the company said.

"Bird One builds on the benefits and learnings of Bird Zero and is forecasted to last in the sharing environment for well over a year", VanderZanden said.

No matter how often people want to use the electric scooters, Bird is significantly trying to be the go-to provider of scooters, whether it is monthly rentals, traditional shared model or selling direct to consumer. The pilot program is helping Bird scale its presence across global cities without the cost and effort it takes to launch Bird-run scooter fleets.

The Bird Platform and Bird One sales are the latest in a series of attempts by the company to grow and compete in the e-scooter market.

"We can get this right", Durkan wrote. "While some companies may see these requirements as too restrictive, they are too important not to fight for".

Scooter sharing has exploded in popularity, and that's led to a lot of broken scooters. Lyft said it was "looking forward to reviewing" the program.

The other companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment. That hesitance was rooted in the safety concerns Durkan cited in her Geekwire guest post.

No need to wait for electric scooters to arrive in your city.

Comprehensive scooter-injury data is limited. "As with any product, injuries can happen, but head injuries are some of the most common scooter injuries".

"We will focus on four non-negotiable principles: safety, fairness to riders, protection of taxpayers through full indemnification, and equity", said Durkan.

You might notice a new electric, dockless scooter cruising city streets starting this week.

While San Francisco and other cities still struggle to regulate the abundance of rentable electric scooters from various start-ups, Bird made a decision to put even more of them on the streets.

Durkan wrote that scooters "should be a complement, rather than a replacement to bike share in Seattle". The program allows customers to rent a scooter for $24.99 a month with no number of rides capped.

That city rolled out an initial pilot program past year but faced issues with people riding and parking on sidewalks. It's a real testament to the new scooter's durability. On Thursday, Lime demonstrated the scooters outside City Hall plaza.

"I think it's time for Seattle to try this out", O'Brien said.

O'Brien said he's interested in learning more about scooter-related injuries but "no more anxious about it than I would be with other modes".
