Local mother working to bring awareness to youth mental health

Local mother working to bring awareness to youth mental health”

Mental health problems can be treated and getting help early can prevent difficulties from getting more serious.

- 60 million people in the United States face the day-to-day reality of living with a mental illness. Thousands have already expressed interest in the movement with the goal of broadening that base of interest and support across the country. Paxton, a former behavioral health patient at Nationwide Children's Hospital is now an active advocate for the On Our Sleeves movement. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being.

"It was huge to have the first lady and the governor here today". The $10,000 scholarship will is awarded to a student committed to a career in behavioral health.

"Health is more than the absence of disease", the CDC has said.

Another issue related to mental health is suicide.

Researcher and post-doctoral candidate Jordan Edwards says, "We know it has impacts on mental health and mental health is something is something that can happen acutely - so immediately upon arrival - but also something that can have an impact on health outcomes over time".

"It's very disheartening and disgusting that the provincial government tries to come across as being heroes of increasing funding for mental health, and in fact they are actually cutting services", said Tupker.

The Behavioral Health Center at AdventHealth Central Texas also has a 24/7 hotline. There are many different mental illnesses, they have different symptoms, and they impact people differently.

African Americans and Hispanic Americans used mental health services at about half the rate of whites in the past year, and Asian Americans at about one-third the rate.

The medical community can help by including mental health screening when preforming routine physicals and checkups. Like learning CPR, there are several mental health basic training courses offered in Orange County.

If you or your child need immediate help due to having suicidal thoughts, go to your local emergency room immediately, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or you can reach the Crisis Text Line by texting "START" to 741-741.
