‘Detective Pikachu’ Narrowly Beats ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at International Box Office

‘Detective Pikachu’ Narrowly Beats ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at International Box Office”

That was enough to fight off newcomer "Pokémon Detective Pikachu" from AT&T Inc.'s Warner Bros., which brought in $58 million.

Outside of North American cinemas, Detective Pikachu has earned $103 million from 62 worldwide territories. It had the biggest bow in China (US$40 million), followed by the UK (US$6.6 million). It's also the second-biggest movie globally of all time with $2.48 billion, again trailing behind only "Avatar" with $2.78 billion. Pokemon: Detective Pikachu opened to a massive $58 million in the United States and Canada this weekend, according to a box office report from Entertainment Weekly. This summer, it looks like Ryan Reynolds and Detective Pikachu are going to fall just short of taking down Endgame in its third weekend, as it puts up another impressive $63.1 million, or about what Infinity War earned in its third weekend. All audiences certainly do seem to love it, giving it an A- Cinemascore. The film follows Tim Goodman (Justice Smith) when his father is mysteriously killed, leading to a team-up with Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds) in order to discover the truth behind his father's supposed death. (2016's Warcraft is still the highest grossing video game film worldwide with US$433 million.) Detective Pikachu had a reported production budget of US$150 million. However, the opening for the Diane Keaton film about senior citizens starting a cheerleading squad is a big disappointment for the studios which had expected the film to bring in at least $8.5 million. The movie played to an older female audience, with women representing 75 per cent of opening weekend crowds, while 85 per cent were over the age of 25. The MCU is the highest grossing film franchise of all time, with global box office receipts exceeding $20 billion.

"The Hustle", a gender-flipped spin on "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" with Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson, landed in third place with $13.6 million despite lackluster reviews.

And in fifth, also down two spots, was Lionsgate's odd-couple romantic comedy Long Shot, at $6.1 million.

In smaller releases, "Tolkien", a biopic about the "Lord of the Rings" author starring Nicholas Hoult opened in ninth place on 1,495 screens with $2.2 million, while the documentary "The Biggest Little Farm" debuted in five locations and earned $101,012. Top territories include Russian Federation with $2.4 million, Germany with $1.8 million, and Australia with $1.8 million.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at US and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore.
