Drugmaker will donate meds for feds' push to end HIV epidemic”

They have produced the costliest HIV drug which will protect the people from getting infected. Truvada has shown to cut the risk of HIV transmission by well over 90% (if used regularly) among such patients.

In a statement, the company announced it would "provide up to 2.4 million bottles of Truvada annually for uninsured Americans at risk for HIV", free of charge, under an "agreement" with the Trump administration. However, not everybody can afford the $20,000 price tag it would cost for a year's worth of treatment.

The deal ends in 2025 but could be renewed for up to 2030.

Gilead has agreed to donate Truvada until the company's next-generation preventative HIV drug, Descovy, is available.

Gilead's donation is expected to help stop the current trend of HIV infection, which is victimizing as many as 40,000 Americans every year.

Pharmaceutical giant Gilead holds the patent over PrEP drug Truvada, which can drastically reduce the risk of being infected with HIV if taken daily, and is recommended for use by at-risk gay and bisexual men.

Following Gilead's announcement, HHS Sec.

"We believe today's donation, combine with efforts to address the root causes of the epidemic, such as racism violence against women, stigma homophobia and transphobia, can play an important role in ending the HIV epidemic in the United States", said Gregg Alton, the chief patient officer for Gilead Sciences in the press release. This will allow an additional 200,000 people to have access to the drug.

Louisiana has one of the highest rates of HIV infection diagnosis in the U.S. However, efforts to expand treatment and STD awareness has resulted in a drop in these rates in recent years. Worldwide, there were about 1.8 million new cases of HIV in 2017.

Carl Schmid of the AIDS Institute called the donation "a really significant step", saying it will make the drug available to uninsured people. However, the House Appropriations Committee has approved almost $500 million in spending for disease treatment and prevention earlier this week.
