Felicity Huffman to plead guilty in college admissions scam

Felicity Huffman to plead guilty in college admissions scam”

Actress Felicity Huffman pleaded guilty to paying $15,000 to a fake charity that helped forge her daughter's SAT scores in the college admissions scandal. Huffman pleaded guilty to a single count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud for paying a proctor $15,000 to correct answers on her daughter Sophia Grace Macy's college- entrance exam.

"Yes, your honor", Huffman answered.

In exchange for Huffman's guilty plea, federal prosecutors have vowed to recommend a sentence at the "low end" of the sentencing range - a $20,000 fine and 12 months of supervised release, according to the plea agreement - but the judge could also choose not to send her prison.

Actress Felicity Huffman departs federal court in Boston on April 3 after facing charges in a nationwide college admissions bribery scandal. Singer also bribed college coaches to falsely certify that students had been recruited for the school's sports teams, further facilitating their path to admission, regardless of their athletic abilities, prosecutors said.

Huffman is married to actor William H. Macy.

Loughlin and Giannulli were among the parents who did not plead guilty initially, and now face an indictment for money laundering in addition to the original fraud charge.

Huffman has apologized and claimed her daughter was unaware of her actions. Huffman's lawyers are arguing that the sentence should be between zero and six months, instead. Prosecutors have said the investigation is ongoing. The judge then reminded the 56-year-old actress that she would be waiving her right to stand trial if she pleaded guilty.

Experts differ on whether Huffman's swift acceptance of responsibility will leave her with an acting career. A limited Netflix series featuring Huffman on the Central Park Five case is expected to debut this month.

Fellow actress Lori Loughlin and her fashion designer husband, Mossimo Giannulli, have pleaded not guilty to paying US$500,000 in bribes to get their daughters into the University of Southern California as crew recruits even though neither of them is a rower.

Sloane, who founded a drinking and wastewater systems company, bought water polo gear online and worked with a graphic designer to create a bogus photo of his son playing the sport for the teen's application, officials say. Seventeen other parents, including Loughlin, have made a decision to fight the charges and formally submitted not guilty pleas.

Huffman told Fox News in a statement last month, "I am pleading guilty to the charge brought against me by the United States Attorney's Office". He began working with authorities previous year and secretly recorded his conversations with Loughlin, Huffman and other parents in the hopes of getting a lenient sentence.
