Samsung Smart TVs Gain Apple's TV App and AirPlay 2 Support

Samsung Smart TVs Gain Apple's TV App and AirPlay 2 Support”

The redesigned Apple TV app aims to solve some of the headaches that have emerged in the streaming media era.

The all-new Apple TV app, which brings together all the ways to watch TV into one app, is available starting today in over 100 countries across iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and select Samsung smart TVs. HBO Now, for example, costs $14.99 per month via Apple's App Store and Apple TV channels.

Apple just took an important step in its bid to take over your living room. Early partner channels include HBO, Starz, Showtime and Tastemade, with more expected to join in the future, Apple said.

In the USA, customers can subscribe directly to channels from the Apple TV app, including HBO, Starz, Smithsonian Channel, Epix, Tastemade and MTV Hits, with more to be added in the future.

The latest update to its mobile operating system features a redesigned TV app, with the ability to subscribe to channels directly in the app.

Apple's television app will also aim to let users search for a show across multiple services in one shot, including by using Siri, the company's voice assistant. Some 100,000-plus movie and TV titles from iTunes have also been added to the app, including purchased titles called out in a new Library tab. Customers with 2019 Samsung smart TVs and select 2018 models can download the new TV app. The app will make recommendations based on a mix of curation by human editors and a viewer's watching habits. The tech giant announced plans for at an event in March; it hasn't revealed pricing or other details for Apple TV+ - which will be available through the Apple TV app - aside from teasing a slew of originals. Because Apple doesn't control the platforms that the new TV app is expanding to, it's understandable why they can't offer these legacy integrations anymore, despite keeping them available on their own first-party platforms. AirPlay 2 and HomeKit functionality will arrive for certain Vizio, LG and Sony smart TVs later this year.
