Charges Against Conor McGregor Officially Dropped in Cell Phone Case

Charges Against Conor McGregor Officially Dropped in Cell Phone Case”

Back in March, Conor McGregor was involved in an incident outside of a Miami nightclub where he took the phone of a fan who was trying to get a picture and smashed it on the ground.

Assistant State Attorney Khalil Madani wrote in a closeout memo that the accuser in the incident, 22-year-old Ahmed Abdirzak, signed a sworn affidavit on March 26. The degree of one felony charge was eventually lowered and the other was converted to a misdemeanor.

"Based on the witness's credibility issues, his unwillingness to respond to a subpoena and the inability of the witnesses to testify as to his subjective mindset, the State of Florida can not prove the charges against Mr. McGregor beyond a reasonable doubt", Madani wrote.

McGregor (21-4 MMA, 9-2 UFC) faced up to 20 years in prison on the initial charges. McGregor himself was not required to attend the proceedings.

"But when there's a civil action open, they're free to negotiate terms and money".

Roughly a month ago, however, Abdirzak withdrew his charges against McGregor, which implied that a settlement had been reached behind the scenes. "I don't know what it cost him, but I'm sure it worked out for him". Most recently McGregor has said that he's done with MMA, so if he wanted to try his hand at movies, now is as good a time as any.

Any conviction would have had dire consequences on McGregor's ability to travel to the U.S. But with the charges dropped, he's a free man.

Despite the looming issues, McGregor has been an active presence on social media, promoting his signature whiskey and praising UFC fights.
