Lenovo joins the foldable fray with new ThinkPad X1 prototype

Lenovo joins the foldable fray with new ThinkPad X1 prototype”

Lenovo announced that it has developed what it claims to be the world's first-ever foldable PC.

The new PC will join the premium ThinkPad X1 family, which Lenovo says means the unprecedented portability will in no means affect productivity or reliability.

But we do know that the foldable PC has a 13.3-inch OLED display that folds inwards. According to the company, the new foldable PC is targeted at highly mobile, tech-savvy professionals who demand the best tools.

Lenovo says this is not a phone, tablet or a hybrid, but a full-fledged notebook with a foldable screen.

"It's going to be running a future Intel-based platform that we're not going to disclose at this time", Tom Butler, Lenovo's ThinkPad marketing director said. Samsung and Huawei have launched their foldable smartphones and will soon be available for purchase. We no longer create devices for our needs but needs for our devices, driven in our experiments by the fact of possibility rather than the enthusiasm of desire. You'd be able to take it to meetings where you'd use the pen to take notes and use it as a large screen tablet to view TV or a movie when back at home. Because the device folds inwards, you theoretically don't have to worry about the display getting scuffed in your bag. The company did talk a bit about the screen though.

It seems Lenovo has worked hard to avoided this, with the company stating that it has doubled the number of tests it performs on the hinges of this foldable PC compared to its standard laptops.

Since Lenovo hasn't shared more info on the same, we expect to get more information by the next CES event.

For now, that is pretty much what Lenovo has revealed so far about the device.

There are no details on the specific hardware configuration other than it runs on Windows and it is powered by Intel. Also beneficial for small companies that don't have dedicated on-site support teams, the ThinkBooks come with self-management features including the preloaded Lenovo Vantage software.

Maybe I'm wrong and foldable PCs are the next big thing, but I remain skeptical they'll be more than a passing fad.
