National Basketball Association draft lottery deep dive - Rankings, odds and intel”

The NBA Draft brings fans two nights of excitement every year. It would be nice to land in the top-four, but they only have between and three and four percent chance of actually getting in that zone. We're talking about a lead guard on a winning team at the next level. And, of course, teams jumping up in the lottery could swing Anthony Davis trade talks.

The NBA now draws the top four picks through the lottery instead of the top three, with the teams' chances of a winning selection flattened. While the Pelicans will have a very easy decision to make if they wind up with the first overall pick (hello, Zion Williamson), and the second- and third-best prospects may be pretty clear in Ja Morant and R.J. Barrett, the outcome of the remaining top 10 picks are more of a gray area.

The worst-case scenario is the Bulls end up eighth in the lottery, which they have a 2.2 percent chance of doing.

Additionally, the team with the worst record used to be guaranteed to receive no worse than the fourth pick. If not conveyed, the pick remains top-five protected in 2020, falls to top-three protected until 2022 and becomes unprotected in 2023.

After drawings determine the top four teams, the other lottery teams will pick in inverse order of regular season record when the NBA Draft is held on June 20. Now, the first four picks will be decided by the lottery draw.

When did the lottery begin?

The New York Knicks - who finished with the worst record this season - won the lottery that year and selected Patrick Ewing.

In an NBA press release on May 8, there were 66 players invited to the 2019 NBA Draft Combine which is set to transpire on May 15.

The top prospect in this year's draft is Zion Williamson, a power forward from Duke who has drawn comparisons to none other than LeBron James for his rare combination of size and athleticism. It wasn't without controversy though, as many still believe that year's Draft Lottery was fixed by the league. "He's a really good basketball player he can do a lot of stuff".
