UN leader arrives in New Zealand on climate change trip

UN leader arrives in New Zealand on climate change trip”

"Climate change is running faster than what we are. the last four years have been the hottest registered", TVNZ quoted Guterres as saying.

Dear friends, it is an enormous pleasure to be here with some of the members of Generation Zero representing the very important leadership that youth around the world is providing to make sure that we are able to reach our central objective: not to have more than 1.5 degrees of increasing temperature at the end of the century.

Guterres, on a three-day visit to New Zealand, met with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who will attend a Paris summit next week calling for eliminating terrorist and violent extremist content on social media.

Coal-based power is key according to UN-environment's 2018 Emissions Gap Report: all plants now in operation are committing the world to around 190 giga tonnes of CO2, and if all coal power plants now under construction go into operation and run until the end of their technical lifetime, emissions will increase by another 150 giga tonnes, jeopardizing our ability to limit global warming by 2°C as agreed upon in the 2015 Paris Agreement. The bill is expected to come to a final vote in Parliament later this year.

Guterres said Pacific Island nations are on the front line of climate change. "We need to protect the lives of all people and we need to protect our planet".

The Secretary-General recalled that he had encountered that resistance at COP24, the 2018 United Nations climate change conference.

António Guterres expressed solidarity with victims of the Christchurch terror attacks and their families.

"New Zealand was not unique in the fact we've experienced an attack of this nature, but what was unique was the way it was created to be broadcast in the way it was", she said. He did praise New Zealand's "extremely important" leadership on climate change - Wellington has introduced legislation to become carbon neutral by 2050.

Ardern this week plans to travel to Paris, where she and French President Emmanuel Macron will host a meeting seeking to eliminate such acts from being shown online. In Fiji, he will meet with leaders and senior government officials from the Pacific Islands Forum. His tour will also take him to Fiji, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu which are under threat from rising sea levels.
