Australian dies in Alaskan plane crash”

The Coast Guard said that it, partner agencies and good Samaritans were continuing to look for those two people in the vicinity of George Inlet near Ketchikan.

Coast Guard planes and vessels scrambled a rescue mission after the crash, sending an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew and two 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crews from its base in Ketchikan.

A 37-year-old Richmond woman is among six dead following the midair crash of two sightseeing planes in Alaska Monday.

The two planes collided in mid-air Monday, and the Coast Guard raised the death toll to six people on Tuesday after finding the bodies of two people who had been missing.

Ten people survived but were injured in the collision, which took place over open water during daylight, the Coast Guard said.

Neither of the single-engine planes was under air traffic control when they collided, Kenitzer said.

The second plane was occupied by four guests, from the Royal Princess, and a pilot, Owyoung says.

During port stops, visitors can shop in tourist stores or take part in several excursions, such as visiting an Alaska Native village, tour the backcountry, or visit a raptor center.

A plane with cruise line passengers crashed into a mountain while returning from the Misty Fjords National Monument, killing all eight passengers and the pilot.

All 14 passengers on both planes were from the cruise ship Royal Princess, on a seven-day trip from Vancouver to Anchorage and operated by Princess Cruises, the Washington Post reported.

At the time of this collision, the National Weather Service says there was 16 kilometres of visibility and it was partly cloudy with 14 km/h southeast winds.

The collisions occurred near the coastal town of Ketchikan, 370 kilometres south of the Alaskan capital Juneau, where the water temperature is now hovering around 10 degrees. The planes came down about a mile and a half apart with some of the debris field on land.

"Taquan Air has suspended all scheduled flights and is cooperating fully with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and other authorities to examine every aspect of this event".

One person died after being unable to escape the Otter as it sank.

"We are devastated by today's incident and our hearts go out to our passengers and their families", it said in a statement.

The search is for two passengers, an Australian and Canadian, but Global Affairs Canada said Tuesday morning that the only Canadian involved in the crash is dead.

The department said the name or hometown of the victim was not being released for privacy reasons.

The company also confirmed that the three victims recovered from the crashed Beaver, including the pilot, were US citizens, as were all the passengers aboard the Taquan Air flight.

Jerry Kiffer of the Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squad said several of the passengers had been removed from the beach by the time his crews arrived on Monday.
