Government Brexit talks with Labour face deadline

Government Brexit talks with Labour face deadline”

"We will therefore be bringing forward the Withdrawal Agreement Bill in the week beginning the 3rd June", he added, noting that official talks are ongoing.

May met with Corbyn "to make clear our determination to bring the talks to a conclusion and deliver on the referendum result to leave the EU".

Brexit had been due to take place on March 29, but May was unable to get her divorce deal ratified by parliament, which rejected the so-called Withdrawal Agreement three times, and now the date is set for October 31.

May has promised to resign as prime minister, should the Brexit deal she struck with the European Union a year ago pass.

Downing Street described the session as "useful and constructive" and said the two teams will continue talks on Wednesday.

The vote is timed to take place before lawmakers take off for summer recess.

No date has been set for the summer recess, but Parliament usually rises near the end of July. May has said she will step down once the first phase of Brexit is complete.

Mrs May has so far held back from introducing the Withdrawal Agreement Bill as she sought agreement from Labour that it would not vote it down.

The Prime Minister will tell Conservative chiefs on Thursday that she intends to leave office by late July if she has delivered Brexit.

Mrs May and her effective deputy David Lidington - who has been leading the negotiations with Labour - led the Cabinet discussions, but other ministers involved in the talks contributed.

"And of course it would absolutely split the Conservative Party".

"We believe that a customs union-based deal with Labour will very likely lose the support of Conservative MPs, like us, who backed the Withdrawal Agreement in March (in many cases very reluctantly), and you be unlikely to gain as many Labour MPs to compensate", they said.

"No leader can bind his or her successor so the deal would likely be at best temporary, at worst illusory", said the letter.

British PM Theresa May will have to get a Brexit deal through parliament before the summer break. Vara, who voted for remain in the 2016 referendum, said May's deal "leaves the United Kingdom in a half-way house with no time limit on when we will finally be a sovereign nation".

After warning the government has yet to put forward "the significant shift" in position the party needed to support a deal, McDonnell said: "What we are all concerned about is the letter from Boris Johnson which said one he wouldn't accept a customs union, one of our key elements, and secondly that if he was leader, and he may well be, that he would overturn any deal that we'd agreed".

Presumably the PM and ministers have noticed that mortgaging the UK's Brexit future to Jeremy Corbyn is haemorrhaging the Tory vote.
