Lakers sign Frank Vogel to multiyear head coaching contract

Lakers sign Frank Vogel to multiyear head coaching contract”

The team announced the hiring Monday and will hold an introductory press conference May 20 at its facility.

However, he failed to negotiate terms and reportedly demanded a longer contract than the two-year deal offered.

Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka announced that he was delighted to welcome Vogel, and hinted that the move was a push to get the team back towards playoff contention.

Instead, Rob Pelinka and Co. elected to submit the former Cavaliers boss and National Basketball Association champion merely a three-year offer; Lue proceeded to withdraw his name from consideration for the head coaching job. "I look forward to coaching such phenomenal talent and bringing my strategic vision to the team".

The 45-year old Vogel worked for the organization before as an advance scout during the 2005-06 season. He has a career record of 304-291.

The Lakers parted ways with coach Luke Walton last month.

"Coach Vogel has a proven track record of success in the NBA Playoffs", Pelinka said in a statement.

The Lakers have missed the playoffs six straight seasons.

Vogel's staff will include former Milwaukee Bucks head coach Jason Kidd, league sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. But we have heard a consistent theme coming from the Lakers front office: they think their problems start with LeBron James and the weight of his superstardom.

But the Lakers are pressing him in a way that nobody could have foreseen, until Phil Jackson came back into the picture. He has a 183-190 record.

Should the Lakers strike out on the big name free agents, the salaries of players in the Tier 3 category would likely command means the Lakers can realistically only sign 2-3 of these players in lieu of a max-player.

They also have five players - Rajon Rondo, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Lance Stephenson, JaVale McGee and Tyson Chandler - who were on one-year or expiring contracts.
