Trump set to sign order restricting foreign telecoms

Trump set to sign order restricting foreign telecoms”

In August, Trump signed a bill that barred the US government itself from using equipment from Huawei and another Chinese provider, ZTE Corp.

In February, Trump suggested that he would not sign the executive order by tweeting that he wanted the USA to win the 5G ultra-high speed mobile telecommunications race by competition and "not by blocking out now more advanced technologies", in a reference that was widely interpreted as referring to Huawei. Huawei has denied the allegations.

In January, the administration was preparing the action, which could significantly restrict Chinese state-owned telecom companies from operating in the USA over national security concerns, people familiar with the matter said at the time.

The order, which has been under consideration for more than a year, won't name specific companies or countries, the news agency reported, citing unidentified sources described as familiar with the plan.

Huawei is a private company that is not controlled by the Chinese government and would refuse to hand over information to Beijing although no such request has been made, the firm's Vice President of Western Europe said on Tuesday. Both Huawei and ZTE Corp. have also been targeted by the USA for alleged schemes to dodge American sanctions on Iran.

The Chinese company has denied that its work poses any risks of espionage or sabotage.

The White House and Commerce Department declined to comment. While the big four USA wireless carriers - Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint - have agreed not to use Huawei in their 5G networks, smaller carriers have made no such agreements, and many use equipment from Huawei and ZTE for cost reasons.

Huawei has also said it is independent from the Chinese government, but some countries have blocked it from their 5G networks on national security grounds.

Last week, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission barred China Mobile Ltd. from the U.S. market over national security concerns and said it was opening a review of other Chinese companies.
