Why Trump's meeting Hungary's Orban is a 'bit controversial'”

WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump praised Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban as a "tough" defender of Christianity, ignoring calls from lawmakers of both parties to call out the right-wing leader as anti-Semitic and anti-democratic.

"People have a lot of respect for this Prime Minister", Trump said in a photo-op in the Oval Office before their meeting. "He's a respected man. I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing", Trump said at the time. It will help preserve over one million cultural artifacts, while the building itself makes Budapest even more handsome, more modern and green, according to Orban.

"Viktor Orban has done a tremendous job in so many different ways", Trump said Monday in greeting Orban at the White House.

Orban, a nationalist, has often had conflicts with the European Union over his anti-immigration campaigns and judicial reforms.

PARDAVI: So it is worrying that after 30 years of, you know, the fall of the Berlin Wall, we have to worry about whether the USA president will still consider these democratic values important enough to raise them alongside the arms deals or the security deals.

Trump has also pushed what critics consider an anti-immigrant policy agenda, calling for a wall on the USA border with Mexico and banning travellers from several Muslim-majority countries at the beginning of his time in office. She's watched Viktor Orban's government demonize groups like hers - the Hungarian Helsinki Committee - which provides legal services for asylums-seekers and for Hungarians.

"From the people, by the people, for the people".

Viktor Orbán: "We have some similar approaches and I would like to express that we are proud to stand together with the United States on fighting against illegal migration, on terrorism, and to protect and help the Christian communities all around the world". "They said no collusion". Hungary is a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally.

Orban was the first European leader to endorse Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

While Trump has clashed with traditional USA allies like Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau and German chancellor Angela Merkel, he has shown a notable affinity for "strongman" leaders including Russia's Vladimir Putin, Rodrigo Duterte in the Philippines, North Korea's Kim Jong-un and China's Xi Jinping.

Ahead of Monday's meeting, a bipartisan group of US senators on the Foreign Relations Committee wrote to Trump to ask him to urge Orban to return to the democratic roots and values that defined Hungary's post-Cold War relationship with the USA and Europe.

"Probably, like me, a little bit controversial, but that's OK, that's OK". "That's okay. You've done a good job and you've kept your country safe".
