Farmer amputates leg with knife to escape auger

Farmer amputates leg with knife to escape auger”

Kaser will get a prosthetic limb once his leg has fully healed.

"It just sucked my leg in and I was trying to pull it out, but it kept pulling", he says.

"I thought, 'How long am I going to stay conscious here, ' you know?" When Kaser couldn't find his cell phone, he nearly lost hope, "I was afraid it was going to suck me in more".

Kurt Kaser, 63, said he was moving crops on his farm in Pender last month when he stepped into a corn hopper and got stuck in the machine, which was still running.

"I was in a hurry and didn't pay attention", he said, hoping his story can serve as a warning to other farmers.

He said that while he was amputating his leg, he could feel the nerve endings in his leg "just ping every time I'd start sawing around that pipe", and that once his leg was free, he "got the heck out of there".

"I about gave up once and just said the heck with it... and then I felt it jerk me again".

Kaser's foot slipped into the auger, torn from his leg before his eyes.

When asked how he has been able to remain positive about the situation, Kaser joked that it's because of his headstrong ways.

Then, in a demonstration of raw grit, Kaser drug himself 200 feet to the nearest phone to call his son - a member of the local squad - for help. He was rushed to a hospital and later airlifted to another hospital where his daughter works.

He's now recovering at a rehabilitation center.

Kaser said his recovery process has been painful, but he is determined to walk again. "I didn't know what to do", he told reporters on Tuesday.

The incident may remind some moviegoers of a scene in the 2010 film "127 Hours". The movie is based on the real story of adventurer Aron Ralston who in 2003 became trapped in a Utah canyon and freed himself by cutting off his own arm with a tiresome pocketknife.
