More than 800 cases of measles in the US

More than 800 cases of measles in the US”

"We all knew that what was really driving the return of diseases like measles was the growing vaccine refusal, the anti-vax movement", said UT Austin professor Sahotra Sarkar.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a 9.8% increase in measles cases across 23 states since May 10, a resurgence that public health officials have attributed to the spread of misinformation about the measles vaccine.

Officials in New York City and Rockland County - where almost 700 people combined have contracted measles since late a year ago - have taken measures such as declaring emergencies over the issue and implementing bans on unvaccinated minors in certain schools or public places.

During a news conference Friday, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said, "We believe in science".

Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin and Johns Hopkins University have compiled the US counties most at risk for measles - and Travis County is among them. "The vaccine avoidance problem is not limited to measles".

A total of 839 cases were reported as of last week.

Lawmakers in Oregon, New Jersey, New York, Iowa, Vermont and Minnesota are considering bills to eliminate non-medical exemptions that allow unvaccinated children to attend public schools.

Measles was once common in the U.S. but gradually became rare after vaccination campaigns that started in the 1960s.

Measles is a virus that brings fever and rash, it is highly infectious and anyone who is not vaccinated against the virus can be infected at any age. Amongst these, 41 are from New York City alone while 25 cases were confirmed in nearby Rockland County, reports Xinhua.

The CDC typically recommends children receive their first dose of the vaccine between 12 and 15 months, but says infants 6 to 11 months old who will be traveling internationally should get one dose before departure.

Measles vaccination rates climbed above 90%, where they've remained in most places.
