BP headquarters in London blockaded by Greenpeace

BP headquarters in London blockaded by Greenpeace”

The campaigners arrived at 3am on Monday and encased themselves in heavy containers before the oil company's annual general meeting.

Activists have "shut down" the London headquarters of BP, using stone barricades to stop its staff entering.

The containers and their human cargo have been placed so as to block the entrances of the oil giant's London HQ on St James' Square, with five of the steel units craned in overnight and put in positions that cover the building's doorways.

Greenpeace also said a team of climbers are abseiling from the roof and blocking out windows with words spelling out "climate emergency" across the façade of the building.

Writing on Twitter, they wrote: "We've met with BP several times but they're still continuing a business which is incompatible with a healthy & prosperous future".

'This is a #ClimateEmergency and there is no place for companies like @BP_plc in our future.

"At their AGM tomorrow BP's [CEO] Bob Dudley has a choice - he can immediately end oil exploration and start switching to 100% renewables or wind down the company", Morozzo said.

A spokesman for Greenpeace said that by 8am on Monday police had attempted to clear the area of pedestrians but had not carried out any arrests.

"We're shutting down BP's headquarters because business as usual is just not an option", Greenpeace U.K. activist Paul Morozzo said in a statement. BP must clean up or clear out #BPshutdown'.

But as BP's 2018 carbon emissions rose to their highest in six years, the London-based major is being lobbied by activists and an increasing number of shareholders to ensure its operations are in line with goals set by the 2015 Paris climate deal to curb global warming.

The activists have accused BP of "fuelling a climate emergency that threatens millions of lives".

"The science is clear - we must stop searching for new oil and gas if we want a liveable planet".

Shell has agreed to the industry's most ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. "The reality is that BP's whole business plan is a heavy bet against our hopes to avoid a climate catastrophe and must change".

It said only $500m (£392.8m) was invested in alternatives to fossil fuels.
