Surges by Schwartz, Tarasenko have Blues one win away from Cup Final

Surges by Schwartz, Tarasenko have Blues one win away from Cup Final”

So were their spirits.

"If I need to, yeah", said Ryan, who along with his dad, Dave, will be attending Game 6 of the Western Conference final between the Blues and San Jose Sharks.

With a 3-2 series lead and any number of Sharks doubtful for Game 6, the Blues look like a solid bet to wrap things up at home on Tuesday.

The St. Louis Blues, led by Ryan O'Reilly, meet the San Jose Sharks, led by Brent Burns, in Game 5 of their best of seven NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs Western Conference Finals on Sunday, May 19, 2019 (5/19/19) at the SAP Center in San Jose, California at 3 p.m. EDT. The San Jose Sharks have allowed three or less goals in nine of their last 15 games.

Following that first period, the Sharks decided not to show up and give up on this game as in that second period, the Blues scored two goals to extend their lead to 3-0 before the Sharks were able to get their legs under them. "With the way the last game ended, we should have known how they were going to come out and we were just a little more casual at the start of the game". His injury history this past season has no doubt hurt Karlsson's free agency value, but if the Sharks can't find a way to keep him around, they'll be no shortage of suitors lining up for his services.

As if going down 3-2 in the series wasn't bad enough, San Jose fans had to watch their fair share of players get injured over the course of the game. Tomas Hertl and Joe Pavelski were both injured late in the game and did not return.

Shots finished 40-21 for St. Louis, who outshot San Jose 36-10 over the final 40 minutes. Joonas Donskoi took a puck to the face but returned to play in the third period.

Halfway through the third period the Sharks even tweeted out a picture of their depleted bench with an emoji version of the sarcastic "this is fine" meme. San Jose averages 9.1 penalty minutes per game, the seventh-most in the league.

"I thought we obviously took way too many penalties", forward Logan Couture said. St. Louis wins this series.

Sharks goalie Martin Jones stopped 35 shots in the loss.

Karlsson's injury problems are no surprise, as he missed 27 of the Sharks last regular season 33 games with a lower-body injury.

Simply put, a healthy Karlsson makes San Jose better. And while the game started off relatively evenly-the Sharks had eleven shots in the first period, but the Blues had one goal on four shots-the Sharks sank pretty quickly after that. Coach Bruce Cassidy said Krejci was given a "maintenance day" Sunday. Schwartz now has 12 goals this postseason, passing his regular-season total of 11.

Meanwhile, the Game 5 victory gave rookie goaltender Jordan Binnington his first shutout of the postseason and improved the Blues' record on the road to 7-2 this postseason.

The Blues might have won this series in five games had officials not missed Timo Meier's hand pass that set up Karlsson's overtime victor in Game 3.

"When Pav got hit high, we lost our composure there in the third period", DeBoer said. "You're never comfortable when your back's against the wall like that, but we have been here before and found a way and I'm confident we can do that again".
