Fire in a coaching centre, at least fifteen dead — Surat”

A devastating fire engulfed a coaching centre in a Surat building in Gujarat on Friday, killing 17 students. Reports suggest since the summer vacations were on, the students who were preparing for their Class 10 and Class 12 boards exams were in the coaching centre at the time of the incident.

Initial reports suggest that numerous children trapped in fire panicked and jumped as fire engines battled the blaze.

The building did not have fire exits, while its fourth floor of the Takshashila Arcade center, where the coaching class has been held, was an illegal addition altogether, a local lawmaker told NDTV.

Footage from the scene a thick plume of smoke and open fire emitting from the building.

Locals were seen helping in the rescue operation to save stranded students as well as other occupants of the four-storey building.

Official sources said some of the students were charred to death while some jumped off the building in panic and died as they fell. Many have been rescued and sent to a hospital.

Nine fire engines and two hydraulic platforms were dispatched to control the blaze. On his Twitter handle he said, "Extremely anguished by the fire tragedy in Surat". My thoughts are with bereaved families.

Mr Rupani has ordered an inquiry into the incident and asked Mukesh Puri, principal secretary of the urban development department, to submit a report within three days, his spokesman said.

Surat lawmaker Darshana Jardosh said 18 children were killed in the tragedy. I pray for the departed souls. Instructed officials to do needful. May those who have been injured recover at the earliest. "Om Shanti." he tweeted.
