‘Forbidden’ planet discovered in Neptunian Desert

‘Forbidden’ planet discovered in Neptunian Desert”

In case you don't know, the Neptunian Desert is the region that's close to stars where there haven't been any Neptune -sized planets discovered so far. Interestingly enough, NGTS-4b still has a gas atmosphere, which has sparked the attention of many astronomers worldwide.

Astronomers used the Next-Generation Transit Survey telescope in the Atacama Desert of Chile to spot the newly identified planet. Depending on their distance from their host star, any given planet will fall into one of several categories... or at least that's what scientists have come to expect.

A unusual exoplanet, NGTS-4b, smaller than Neptune with its own atmosphere has been discovered in the Neptunian Desert, by an global collaboration of astronomers, with the University of Warwick taking a leading role.

Dr. Richard West of the University of Warwick led the team in finding NGTS-4b.

This zone gets a lot of irradiation from the star, and this means that the planets don't retain their gaseous atmosphere because they evaporate and leave a rocky core behind.

Astronomers have discovered a "forbidden" planet three times the size of Earth in a region of a distant star system where theory suggests it should not exist.

A Neptunian planet has been found in what should be a "Neptunian Desert" by telescopes run by the University of Warwick in an worldwide collaboration of astronomers.

Astronomers have found an exoplanet so rare that they have deemed it "The Forbidden Planet", according to a new study.

"What we do is we monitor the star's brightness over many, many months and we look for very minute dips in the flux of the star that tells us that the planet's passing in front of us", Bayliss said.

Discovered using the state-of-the-art Next-Generation Transit Survey (NGTS) observing facility, created to search for transiting planets on bright stars, but NGTS-4b is so small other ground surveys wouldn't have spotted it. Planets orbiting so close to a star usually have no atmosphere, because it boils off due to radiation and heat.

"It is truly remarkable that we found a transiting planet via a star dimming by less than 0.2 per cent".

"We are now scouring out data to see if we can see any more planets in the Neptune Desert", West said.

"This planet must be tough - it is right in the zone where we expected Neptune-sized planets could not survive", Richard West, first author of the research, published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, and a physics researcher at the UK's University of Warwick, said on Wednesday.

The findings of the global study are featured in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
