Video Game Addiction Is Now Officially Considered A Disease

Video Game Addiction Is Now Officially Considered A Disease”

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) - which opposed the addition - and the World Health Organization met in December to discuss the decision past year to list "gaming disorder" as an official addictive disorder in the 11th International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11).

To be diagnosed with this disorder, people must be playing video games so much that it 'takes precedence over other life interests'.

The WHO describes burnout as a condition "conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed".

The decision was made to include Gaming Disorder in ICD-11 "based on reviews of available evidence and reflects a consensus of experts from different disciplines and geographical regions that were involved in the process of technical consultations undertaken by World Health Organization in the process of ICD-11 development".

The definition says gaming disorder is characterized by a 'pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behavior ("digital gaming" or "video-gaming"), which may be online (i.e., over the internet) or offline'.

World Health Organization also noted that burnout specifically refers to a condition experienced in the context of work. Typically, a patient must have shown symptoms for at least one year to be diagnosed.

The organizations decrying the decision include Interactive Games & Entertainment Association, the Interactive Software Federation of Europe, K-GAMES, and representatives across Europe, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, South Africa and Brazil.

'Gaming disorder is not based on sufficiently robust evidence to justify inclusion in one of the WHO's most important norm-setting tools, ' the IGEA said in a statement.

How playing video games can make you a better doctor Level Ex's smartphone games aim to give physicians an insight into hard and unusual clinical cases.

"The increased risk may be from the frequency of gaming, from the amount of time spent on these activities, from the neglect of other activities and priorities, from risky behaviors associated with gaming or its context, from the adverse consequences of gaming, or from the combination of these".

Gaming and depression may be interlinked in a way and therefore it is hard to distinguish them.
