Flavoring E-cigarettes May Increases the Risk of Cardiovascular Diseases, Says Study”

The negative effects were found to vary in severity based on which flavorings were used with the liquids - and, the study warns, some of the most popular options were the most harmful. "It doesn't have the carcinogens associated with smoking, but don't use e-cigarettes with the assumption that if I switch to e-cigarettes it will be good for my cardiovascular health".

Cells, known as endothelial cells, line the surface of the blood vessels and help keep your heart healthy. Cells were traditionally less viable, and they had many symptoms of procrastination which started performing.

For the study, Wu and his colleagues grew endothelial cells from blood samples drawn from five smokers, five nonsmokers, two e-cigarette users and two people who use both e-cigarettes and tobacco cigarettes. They exposed the cells to six different e-cigarette flavourings, testing if the flavours - and not just the nicotine - caused any effects.

According to Wu, liquids free of nicotine also cause severe damage to the cells; but there is one factor that split the results: flavor.

"Until now, we had no data about how these e-liquids affect human endothelial cells", said Joseph Wu, MD, PhD, director of the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute and professor of cardiovascular medicine and of radiology.

A paper describing the findings was published online May 27 in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

However, this new scientific enquiry is the first to specifically analyse the impact of e-liquids on cardiovascular cells.

The FDA estimates that more than 3.5 million middle and high school students used e-cigarettes in 2018, even though sales to minors are prohibited.

They discovered that exposure to six different flavors (fruits, tobacco, vanilla and caramel tobacco, salted butter caramel, cinnamon and menthol) leads to high levels of molecules involved in cell death.

Multiple flavorings were described as "moderately toxic" to the endothelial cells with the exception of menthol and cinnamon, which were described as "particularly" damaging. The e-liquid flavored with caramel and vanilla also disrupted growth, but not as severely.

Bottles of flavoring for e-cigarettes stand displayed in a tobacco shop in New York on June 23, 2015.

"It's important for e-cigarette users to realize that these chemicals are circulating within their bodies and affecting their vascular health", Wu said.

However, Freedman said the findings "suggest that even without the smoke of combustible cigarette products, there may be a smoldering fire of adverse health effects".
