Man murders HIV positive wife in epidemic-hit Larkana”

"The WHO team will try to ascertain the source of the outbreak and control it, as well as provide its expertise in the areas of HIV testing, paediatric HIV treatment and family counselling", said UN Secretary General's Deputy Spokesman Farhan Haq.

Larkana now has 4 established hospitals for the HIV treatments and several screening camps across the district. The WHO team will be working closely with these hospitals and the field teams now placed in the Larkana district.

A team of experts from the World Health Organisation (WHO) has arrived in Karachi to support the health authorities in their response to an outbreak of HIV in Larkana at the request of the health ministry.

"Led-by Oliver Morgan, Director of Health Emergency Information and Risk Assessment, in the Health Emergencies Programme of WHO, a 12-member global team comprising experts from CDC Atlanta, Georgia, Unicef and Unaids is landing today in Karachi to investigate the root cause of the latest HIV outbreak in Ratodero area of Larkana", an official of the WHO told The News worldwide.

The team is working closely with the ministry in Pakistan and partners, including the Aga Khan University, Pakistan's Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Programme (FELTP), UNAIDS and Unicef in Larkana.

In rural Sindh - long bridled by harsh poverty and illiteracy - access to information about HIV and other diseases has kept the large swathes of the population in the dark about how the virus is transmitted.

The petitioner, Masroor Ali Shah, also prayed the court to direct the government to conduct HIV screening across the province and to build HIV and AIDS treatment hospitals in all the districts. The commission was supposed to be established soon after the enactment of Sindh HIV and AIDS Control, Treatment and Protection Act in 2013 in the Sindh Assembly. They will meet the officials of the health department and other concerned departments.

Till now 681 HIV positive cases have been identified among the 21,375 tested in Ratodero town of Larkana district in the north-west part of the province.
