Stunning Mars Video Shows Wispy Clouds Gliding By Martian Sky”

After finishing its exploration of Mount Sharp in the Gale Crater, where it landed back in August 2012, the Curiosity rover is now studying what NASA has been calling "the clay-bearing unit" due to the suspected presence of clay minerals.

NASA's Curiosity Mars rover has found the most astounding measures of clay minerals at any point discovered amid its central goal on the Red Planet, the U.S. space organization said.

Because clay often forms in water, finding and studying clay deposits on Mars could help better explain the Red Planet's watery past, as well as the potential for Mars to host extraterrestrial life.

The rover's mineralogy instrument, called CheMin (Chemistry and Mineralogy), provided the first analyses of rock samples drilled in the clay-bearing unit. It was also stated that the rover also took a selfie on 12th May, celebrating to the 2405th day of mission (according to bloodbath planet) on Mars. Curiosity is exploring Mount Sharp to see if it had the conditions to support life billions of years ago. To the lower-left of the rover are its two recent drill holes, at targets called "Aberlady" and "Kilmarie".

It is likely that the rocks in the area formed as layers of mud in ancient lakes, something Curiosity also found lower on Mount Sharp.

Though the samples confirmed that part of Mars is clay-enriched, as anticipated, NASA says it is yet to understand what this discovery means for the Martian region.

NASA is now trying to coordinate with another Mars visitor - the Insight lander - to take photos of the same clouds as Curiosity at the same time, as this will allow them to make more accurate inferences about the clouds' altitude.
