What Is Worse For Cholesterol: Poultry Or Red Meats? Think Again

What Is Worse For Cholesterol: Poultry Or Red Meats? Think Again”

"When we planned this study, we expected red meat to have more adverse effect on blood cholesterol levels than white meat".

Williams and Sarah King, Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute. The analysis is reportedly the first to comprehensively compare the impact that red and white meat have on cholesterol.

Flying in the face of popular belief, new research suggests both red meat and white meat can drive up your cholesterol levels.

But a new study finds that consuming white meat - specifically poultry - affects blood cholesterol levels in about the same way that red meat does. And what they found was surprising, given the conventional wisdom surrounding white meat. "These results were similar whether or not the diets were high or low in saturated fat".

The findings were published June 4 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. There are actually different kinds of LDL, characterised by the size of their particles. Granted, smaller LDL particles are more strongly linked to cardiovascular disease than large ones.

In the current study, eating both types of meat only led to higher levels of large-size LDL, not the other types. "Their effects on cholesterol are identical when saturated fat levels are equivalent".

The study does have some caveats.

Similarly, red and white meat increased amounts of large LDL in comparison to nonmeat diets. The scientists also said that plant proteins were the healthiest for blood cholesterol.

Often associated with contributing to "bad" cholesterol levels, red meat consumption is generally recommended in moderation, while white meat, which is generally leaner, is usually considered a healthier alternative.
