Brexit Party fails to win first seat in UK by-election

Brexit Party fails to win first seat in UK by-election”

She announced her decision to quit as prime minister last month.

She will remain in her prime ministerial post only until a replacement is elected and the failure to deliver Brexit is already being scripted as her legacy. Hustings for all nominees will be held in Parliament on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Eleven Conservative MPs are vying to replace her as party leader and, ultimately, prime minister, according to BBC. Further rounds will be held the following week until the field is narrowed to two.

The ruling Conservatives came third with 21 percent, while the Liberal Democrats won 12 percent.

"The Rt Hon Theresa May will remain as acting leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party until her successor has been announced", it concluded.

Meanwhile Conservative chairman Brandon Lewis has admitted that the party is going through a "difficult process" as two Tory MPs, including one Cabinet minister, are under pressure from local members to not stand for re-election.

"There will be no renegotiation", European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said - not for the first time - last week.

She became the party leader after Cameron's departure and the second female prime minister of the country on July 13, 2016.

The election is yet more evidence that Britain's 2016 vote to leave the European Union is reshaping the country's politics, challenging the dominance of the two main parties as loyalties split over Brexit, the biggest shift in foreign policy since World War Two.

"A dedicated public servant who loves this country and has done more to promote women in Conservative politics than nearly anyone else, her legacy will be one of decency and determination to do the right thing".

The impasse has transformed the UK's political map. May's Conservatives and the main opposition Labour Party are both fractured over how to leave the EU.

Nearly three years since Britain voted 52 percent to 48 percent to leave the European Union, lawmakers remain at loggerheads over how, when or even whether to leave the EU.

His single-issue party suffered a setback after narrowly missing out on winning its first parliamentary seat, losing to Labour in a by-election in the eastern city of Peterborough on Thursday. He champions a tougher stance on Brexit, saying Britain should leave with or without a deal by the new deadline of October 31, and is trying to persuade Conservatives that he, a former London mayor, is the only candidate who could win a new national election for the Conservative Party.

Despite the loss, Farage said the result showed that British politics has "fundamentally changed", with the stranglehold of Conservative and Labour now broken.

53 per cent of voters think Boris Johnson would be a bad prime minister.

Environment Secretary Michael Gove, another leading contender, said the Peterborough result was a message that "we've got to come back together as a party and work together to get Brexit done".

"I believe that European leaders want to find a way through this", Gove wrote in the Daily Mail. The only way to stop this is to lead Britain out of the EU.
