Mexican President offers "outstretched hand" to Trump after averting tariff war

Mexican President offers

The Times did acknowledge deep down in the text that the Mexicans offered more than ever on some accounts and that part of the negotiations were about the USA getting Mexico to act faster on previous promises with the threat of tariffs.

"These are agreements that Mexico had already made, in some cases months ago", former congressman Beto O'Rourke said in an interview on ABC.

In his speech to a crowd of thousands, the president said the tariffs would have impacted both economies.

The article, titled "Mexico Agreed to Take Border Actions Months Before Trump Announced Tariff Deal", suggested that Trump may have touted Friday's deal as a way to "save face" despite not actually making any headway.

He said Mexico has agreed to work to "stem the tide of Migration through Mexico, and to our Southern Border" and said those steps would "greatly reduce, or eliminate, Illegal Immigration coming from Mexico and into the United States".

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Trump had "undermined America's pre-eminent leadership role in the world by recklessly threatening to impose tariffs on our close friend and neighbor to the south".

The U.S. -Mexico Joint Declaration released this Friday by the State Department also mentioned no such information, which Trump said that the agricultural deal was included in.

Previously, Trump announced in all caps on Twitter that Mexico "agreed to immediately begin buying large quantities of agricultural products from our great patriot farmers".

In this Friday, November 16, 2018, file photo, members of the US military install multiple tiers of concertina wire along the banks of the Rio Grande near the Juarez-Lincoln Bridge at the US-Mexico border, in Laredo, Texas.

After CBS reported that she had contradicted the president, Jose Diaz-Bresno, correspondent for the Mexico City newspaper Reforma, tweeted, "True headline: MX Ambassador AVOIDS contradicting Trump", then posted the old and new tweets.

Trump and his Republican supporters hailed the deal as a major breakthrough, but the Democrats sharply criticized his frequent resort to tariff threats and said numerous Mexican concessions were made months ago.

Lamy said he believed there was "absolutely no doubt" that the WTO would have found in favour of Mexico if Lopez Obrador had asked the trade body to arbitrate the tariff dispute with Trump, a process he said would have taken around two years for a definitive ruling. That will be announced at the appropriate time, ' he wrote.

After nine days of uncertainty, Mr. Trump backed down and accepted Mexico's promises.

Omar Jadwat, director of the ACLU's Immigrants' Rights Project, said the group would continue to press its legal challenge to the policy. "This is an historic night!" he tweeted. "Now that the problem is solved, I'm sure we won't be hearing any more about it in the future".
