Three will switch on its '2x faster' 5G network in August

Three will switch on its '2x faster' 5G network in August”

While Three is behind its rivals, with EE's network already live and Voda's set to launch in just a few weeks time, it's boldly claiming that its "true" 5G network will deliver speeds that are "at least 2x" faster and more reliable than services offered by other mobile operators.

At launch, Three's 5G network will only be available in London as a home broadband service. Its initial offering, though, will consist of a broadband-only solution.

"It's clear that consumers and businesses want more and more data", chief executive Dave Dyson said in a statement.

"We have worked hard over a long period of time to be able to offer the best end to end 5G experience".

UK MOBILE OPERATOR Three has announced that it will switch on its 5G network August and is gloating that it'll deliver "double" the speeds of rival networks.

For those of you keeping count, it means Three may well have the widest 5G coverage by the time the year is up. EE now only offers 5G in six cities, and promised a total of 16 locations will have 5G before the end of the year.

That could potentially give Three more 5G coverage by the end of 2019 than either EE or Vodafone.

The locations to be switched-on in the first batch are Birmingham, Bolton, Bradford, Brighton, Bristol, Cardiff, Coventry, Derby, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Hull, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Middlesbrough, Milton Keynes, Nottingham, Reading, Rotherham, Sheffield, Slough, Sunderland and Wolverhampton.

United Kingdom consumers are predicted to consume 13 times more mobile data in 2025 than today and 5G is hoped to cater with this extra demand.

Three said its 2 billion pound ($2.55 billion) 5G infrastructure investment included network improvements in major British cities and a cloud core network provided by Nokia. Naturally such figures are unlikely to be achieved in a normal real-world network environment, where many users will be sucking from the same limited capacity (data supply and spectrum).

We'll bring you more news as we get it.
