Audi E-tron recalled for battery seal, potential "thermal event"

Audi E-tron recalled for battery seal, potential

Audi of America is voluntarily recalling its new e-tron battery electric vehicle in the U.S.to replace a wiring grommet between the charging port and the battery that is part of the wiring assembly. "Audi e-tron vehicles unaffected by the recall remain available for delivery and our reservation system remains open to receive customer reservations".

Under certain circumstances, Audi says, moisture could seep into the vehicle's electrical system, presenting a risk of an electrical short and potential fire.

The company isn't aware of any fires or injuries because of the flaw, which affects a total of 1,644 models in total. Talks with German authorities about a potential recall in Europe are ongoing, Audi spokesman Udo Ruegheimer said. Not all vehicles delivered to customers so far areaffected, the Audi representative said.

"Audi of America takes the safety of its customers and the quality of our vehicles very seriously", the representative said. No incidents have been reported globally yet, but Audi is taking precautions to make sure that the problem is fixed.

Audi is now in the process of showing the e-tron to its customers in New Zealand, with the first cars expected to arrive here in July.

The recall of Audi's e-tron comes about a month after the automaker began delivering the vehicle to customers.

While electric vehicles are no more prone to accidents or fires than gasoline-powered cars - and might be less so, according the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration - the lithium-ion battery technology that powers them is still evolving, and there is no consensus on safe system design. It is unclear if the campaign will delay further deliveries, as the fix is not expected to become available until August.

New e-tron owners will have the option of continuing to drive the vehicle until a warning light illuminates.
