Bentley Flying Spur Sedan First Look

Bentley Flying Spur Sedan First Look”

Instead of permanent all-wheel drive found on the previous generation, the redesigned Flying Spur gets a clutched system that sends power to the rear axle and, when needed depending on road conditions and wheel slip, will send power to the front axle for active awd.

The current-generation Flying Spur with a W-12 starts at $229,825 in the USA, including shipping and gas guzzler tax.

The same MSB architecture that serves the Continental GT and the Porsche Panamera has been called up for duty. The LED matrix headlamps have been fitted with chrome sleeves in order to glimmer even when the lights are off. Finally, the Flying Spur will come standard with rear-wheel steering-the first ever Bentley to be so equipped-to improve agility in tight corners and enhance stability through high-speed sweepers. And it is electrically retractable and the logo's wings are illuminated as well.

The interior overhaul befits Bentley's move into its second century. A 12.3-inch screen on the instrument panel handles infotainment needs and performs several tricks, one of which is a proximity sensor that primes the system for commands as a hand draws near. The second side of the display reveals three analog dials showing outside temperature, a compass, and a chronometer. New vents sit alongside modern features like wireless phone charging and USB ports.

The interior is obviously luxurious, and is available in 15 different hide colours. Also on the extra-cost menu, a full-length panoramic glass roof with an inset sunroof.

The Flying Spur will initially be available with a reworked version of the brand's 6.0-litre twin-turbo W12 motor that's good for 635hp and 900Nm of torque. Mood lighting is an option, with seven colors. A Bang & Olufsen upgrade offers 1,500W and 16 speakers, while a new Naim 2,200W system is the flagship with 19 speakers. Along with the bump in twist, the faster cog-swapper drops the 0-60 miles per hour time from 4.2 seconds in the previous Flying Spur W12 S to 3.7 seconds. Driver Assistance Systems include traffic assistance, city assistance, and blind spot warnings.

A host of driveline and suspension changes elevate the dynamic experience. The rear wheels are steered in the opposite direction to the front wheels at low speeds, reducing the turning circle and making parking easier. The three-chamber air springs-similar to those fitted to the Continental GTs-have 60 percent more capacity, allowing for finer degrees of adjustment, and the 48-voly anti-roll system uses electric motors to twist the rollbars against the cornering loads keeping the auto flat through turns. A 48-volt system controls an adjustable anti-roll bar, so that it can change stiffness on demand.

Although the Flying Spur is all-wheel drive, the torque split is resolutely biased to the rear: Comfort and Normal modes allow a maximum of 38 percent of the torque to be sent to the front wheels, but selecting Sport mode caps that at 17 percent. Brake-based torque vectoring manages transverse power.

Bentley says that the 2020 Flying Spur will be available to order from the fall; pricing will be confirmed closer to that point.
