Mozilla is working on a premium version of Firefox

Mozilla is working on a premium version of Firefox”

It was emphasized that all the free features and services now available in the browser would remain gratis going forward.

Beard's answers sounded more hypothetical in detail than the announcement of guaranteed features, but he did give some insight into what a premium Firefox might offer.

Firefox is building a paid version of its namesake browser that's aimed for an Autumn release.

The company's reason for making this move is so that it has another source of income.

On the one hand, good job, Mozilla, for thinking of ways to integrate much-needed features and simplifying the use of a quality VPN-something most people should do but won't out of laziness, cheapness, or lack of funds.

But if you're a pessimist, you could read ominous undertones into premium Firefox as the start of browsers pivoting toward becoming yet another subscription service as Chrome's competitors try to whittle away at its dominance.

Then, there's Pocket, a service acquired in 2017 that allows online content to be saved for later offline perusal. "This is the content business". So we will roll out a subscription service and offer a premium level. In an interview with German magazine t3n published Friday, Beard suggested this might include a secure storage solution or a VPN service.

We hope to hear more soon.

Right now, 90 percent of Mozilla's revenue comes from its partnerships with search engine providers, and mainly from its Google deal.

It appears there will be two option for Firefox users: pay nothing and get some VPN bandwidth, while those who want more can pay extra. We also recognize that there are consumers who want access to premium offerings, and we can serve those users too without compromising the development and reach of the existing products and services that Firefox users know and love.

A Mozilla spokesperson was not available for additional details.
