Scores killed in attack on central Mali village”

At least 95 people were killed when gunmen raided their village in central Mali late on Sunday, FRANCE 24 has confirmed, marking the latest attack in a region that has witnessed a resurgence of ethnic and jihadist violence.

A tribal militia killed as many as 150 men, women and children in a village in central Mali on Monday, heightening fears that an Islamist insurgency in the area is mutating into an ethnic war.

The latest attackers are suspected "terrorists", Mali's government said in a statement later Monday. It was not immediately clear who carried out the attack.

Sobanou-Kou is made up of people from the ethnic Dogon community.

The victims of Saturday's deadly attack were "killed with guns and machetes", a local security official told AFP news agency.

MINUSMA said last month that since January 2018, it has documented abuses by traditional hunters against the Fulani population that have resulted in 488 deaths in the Mopti and Segou regions.

The Fulani ethnic group are semi-nomadic and primarily Muslim.

'Right now we have 95 dead civilians.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack on the ethnic Dogon village, though tensions have been high since an ethnic Dogon militia was accused of carrying out a massacre in an ethnic Peuhl village in March that left at least 157 dead.

These attacks, and other attacks by militant groups, have also caused political unrest. The growing violence led to the entire Malian government stepping down in April.

The violence in central Mali is characterized by "killings, enforced disappearances and burning of villages on an appalling scale", Amnesty International said Monday.

"The Government of Mali presents its deepest condolences to mourning families and assures all measures will be taken to arrest and punish the authors of this carnage", the communications ministry said in a statement.

The ethnic groups have long had disagreements about resources.

It came less than three months after almost 160 members of the Fulani ethnic group were slaughtered by a group identified as Dogon. Human Rights Watch says that Islamist armed groups have increased their presence in central Mali since 2015.

The Peuhl are accused of working alongside jihadists from the Islamic State of Greater Sahara organization to attack Dogon villages and prevent residents from cultivating their land. "The Fulani say the Malian military arms the Dogon hunters against them". Security reinforcements were deployed to track the perpetrators, it said.

There are several Islamist groups based in northern Mali.

"If these concerns are not addressed, there is a high risk of further escalation that could lead to the commission of atrocity crimes", he wrote in a report to the UN Security Council.
