Chris Froome to miss Tour de France after crashing during practice

Chris Froome to miss Tour de France after crashing during practice”

Clearly, he won't be at the start of the Tour de France. He is now on his way to a local hospital and won't start today's fourth stage.

Chris Froome, the four-time victor of the Tour de France, will miss next month's race after he was "badly injured" in a crash during the Criterium du Dauphine in France.

A witness at the scene of the accident said Froome had suffered an open fracture of the femur and had suffered other injuries too, notably to his elbows. "We will provide a further update in due course", Ineos said on Twitter.

"It's clear he'll take no part in the Tour", Brailsford told French television while four time Tour de France victor Froome was being treated at the scene in a parked ambulance. Obviously we're trying to monitor that at the minute and think about Michelle and his family and everything else. Dave Brailsford told reporters that Froome and his teammate, Wout Poels, were racing downhill when a gust of wind swept Froome off course during a recon, or pre-ride, before stage four in Roanne.

Usher said focus would now turn to supporting Froome during his period of recovery. "It'll take quite a long time before he races again", Brailsford added to French television. "He's just going to get airlifted shortly to hospital, Saint-Etienne, maybe Lyon".

Froome was eighth in the Dauphine standings, 24 seconds behind leader Dylan Teuns of Belgium.

But all indications were that Froome had done enough to be Ineos' unofficial leader at the Tour, ahead of both Thomas and Bernal, as he aimed for an historic fifth title. Sport is full of history and legends.

Froome was planning to use the Criterium du Dauphine as a final preparation for the upcoming Tour de France, which takes place over three weeks from Saturday July 6 to Sunday July 28.
