Did Donald Trump Inadvertently Reveal a Secret Mexico Deal?

Did Donald Trump Inadvertently Reveal a Secret Mexico Deal?”

Stew Leonard's Supermarket Stores CEO weighs in on the impact a tariff hike on Mexico would have on American goods.

Under duress because of Trump's threat to impose tariffs unless Mexico acted to stem the surge in migrants that has overwhelmed US detention facilities and its immigration court system, Mexico signed a pact last week agreeing to control the flow of people from Central America, including deploying 6,000 members of a new national guard along its border with Guatemala.

Last month Trump threatened he would impose a 5 per cent tariff on Mexican imports if the country didn't assist in stopping Central American migrants from flowing into the US illegally.

The key part of the agreement gives the United States the authority to return migrants who apply for asylum to Mexico while they await adjudication of their cases, which can take years to be fully processed. Mexican officials have described their commitment as an accelerated deployment. The Post called Mexico's promises "unprecedented" and the measures "more substantial" than promises made by Mexican officials in the past.

Washington wants Mexico to be declared a safe third country in which asylum seekers would have to seek safe harbor instead of the United States, a demand Mexico has rejected in the past.

It was not clear what specific measures the Mexican government would have to take.

But the Times' story published Saturday reported that the Mexican government had already pledged to deploy its guard to the border in March during talks with former Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

Trump blasted that report, calling it a "FRAUD" and "nothing more than a badly reported "hit job" on me".

Ebrard said he thought Trump might be making a calculation based on Mexican agricultural imports when freed from the threat of tariffs.

Asylum is at the core of Trump's concerns about a surge in undocumented immigration because a large proportion of the people apprehended at the U.S. President Trump also claimed that Mexico will "immediately" start buying more US-made farm products. This is important to both countries.

That is different from a long-standing U.S. demand that Mexico be declared a safe place for asylum seekers, requiring them to seek refuge in Mexico if they passed through the country on the way to the US. 'I think they probably got it the probably from somebody who worked here and said how well they were doing. "I can tell you that the team here at the State Department believes full-throatedly that this an important set of agreements, important set of understandings, one that we'll continue to work on".

But moments later he called the side agreement "my option".

USA automakers importing cars from Mexico have received a reprieve on tariffs after President Donald Trump secured an agreement on migration with the neighboring country. It has to be brought by their legislative body, it's got to be taken to a vote.

"We do not anticipate a problem with the vote but, if for any reason the approval is not forthcoming, tariffs will be reinstated", he added, without elaborating.

In bright sunshine outside the White House, Trump waved what he said was the text of the one-page agreement Mexican and USA officials signed Friday to avert the application of tariffs on their exports to the United States.
